Frequently Asked Questions
-
What type of tuition is best for my child?
It really depends on your child's individual needs, learning style, and goals. If they need help with confidence , one-to-one tuition might be ideal for personalised support. If they enjoy learning with peers and benefit from discussion, small group sessions can be great too. It can also depend upon particular topics they struggle with too. Once I know a bit more about them as a person, their school, and areas of teh curriculum they may be struggling with, I can suggest the best fit. I really would urge you to book a free taster session. It’s a great opportunity for me to get to know your child and understand their needs, so we can come up with the perfect plan together.

Why choose you over other tuition companies?
You'll quickly see that I'm genuinely passionate about supporting the children I teach. With over 10 years of teaching experience, I’ve supported thousands of students with a wide range of needs, including SEND, SEMH, EAL, and LAC. I know how to adapt lessons to suit every learner and have a strong toolkit for building engagement, confidence, and challenge.
As an examiner with 4 years' marking experience, I understand what the exam boards are looking for, so I teach with clarity, purpose, and proven techniques.
Most importantly, I care deeply about helping learners grow in confidence, resilience, and self-belief. It's also worth knowing that not all tutors are qualified teachers, but I am. With over a decade of classroom experience, you can be confident your child is being supported by someone who truly understands how to teach, not just what to teach.
-
How will I know my child is making progress?
In the first few sessions, I’ll take my time to really get to know your child, what makes them tick, how they learn best, and what academic stage they’re currently working at. I’ll check their understanding with some low-stake activities, to establish a starting point.
Each week, usually after the session, I’ll send you a quick update with how things are going, what we’ve covered, what’s going well, what we’ll keep working on, and just as importantly, whether your child is actually enjoying their learning.
-
How do you establish what to teach in each session?
All sessions are guided by the National Curriculum and relevant exam board specifications. For long term students, I follow a structured scheme of work to ensure comprehensive coverage, while for shorter-term or GCSE focused tuition, I target specific areas for development. As a trained teacher, I continuously assess your child’s progress and each session is tailored to their current level of understanding to keep learning effective and focused. I also take into account your child’s individual learning style and interests, using approaches and resources that engage them and help build confidence and resilience along the way.

I'm so confused about the Science GCSE's. Can you help me?
There are six GCSE science papers in total, two each for Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
Paper 1 for each subject typically covers content taught in Year 10, while Paper 2 focuses on material from Year 11.
If you’d like a detailed breakdown of the topics covered in each paper, most revision guides list them clearly at the front. Be sure to choose the correct revision guide, as each exam board has its own specifications, and while the guides may look similar, the content can differ. Common exam boards include AQA, Edexcel, and OCR, so double-check which one your child is studying before you buy.
Across all six papers, students are assessed not only on subject knowledge but also on scientific enquiry and mathematical skills, which are consistently threaded throughout the exams. These transferable skills are vital and should be integrated into regular revision.
Additionally, students must have a thorough understanding of the Required Practicals, key experiments embedded in the curriculum that are often heavily assessed in the exams. These practicals frequently carry significant mark weightings.

What happens during times of sickness?
If I ever need to cancel due to illness, I’ll always give you as much notice as possible, though it takes quite a lot for me to consider myself 'too sick' to teach! That said, if a session does need to be rescheduled, we’ll work together to find a time that suits you. Your child’s continuity of learning is always a priority.
I completely understand that children can become unwell at short notice. However, if you need to cancel a session due to illness, please try to give at least 24 hours' notice. Cancellations made with less than 24 hours’ notice may not be able to be rescheduled, and the session fee will still apply.
-
How do I pay? Can I cancel / rearrange?
When creating a booking, using the Book Now page, you will be asked for payment at the time of booking. You are able to cancel or amend your booking up to 24 hours before the session using the link sent to you in the confirmation email. After this time the fee is non-refundable but I’ll do my best to move the session to the next available slot.
-
My child has a friend interested in tuition, can we book both of them onto the same group session?
Absolutely. Group tuition can be an excellent choice as many students benefit from the opportunity to collaborate with peers, share ideas, and encourage one another. It’s also a more cost-effective alternative to one-to-one sessions, offering high-quality support at a reduced rate. As an added bonus, you’ll receive a free one-hour session for every friend you refer, once they have signed up for a paid session.
-
How do I book a Free Taster Session?
Just fill out the form on the Services page with a few details about your child, and I’ll get them booked in as soon as possible. After the session, we can have a chat about next steps , only if you'd like to, of course. There’s absolutely no pressure or obligation.
-
We started off with face to face tuition can we switch to online?
No problem at all. Just book in as normal using the online booking form but choose the online option rather than face to face.
-
What happens if we arrive late to a session?
Unfortunately if I have back-to-back sessions I would be unable to extend the session. However if there is a free slot after your session then I will happily extend to ensure no valuable learning time is lost.

I have booked my child in for a face to face session, but what do I actually do when they are being tutored?
For safeguarding reasons, a parent or guardian is always required to be present in the room during tuition sessions.
